The Invitation to Apply is the grand ticket offered to well-performed Canadian immigration candidates in the Express Entry Pool who has qualified and has been deemed worthy of selection to apply for permanent residency in Canada by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Invitations to Apply are issued on a priority basis when IRCC performs a draw from the Express Entry pool, which is made up of candidates who have made an expression of interest in immigrating to Canada.

Both getting a job offer and being in the Express Entry Pool isn’t a guarantee of being selected, getting the Invitation to Apply therefore is the determining factor to proceeding to the next stage in the Canadian Immigration application process.

In order to be considered for a Canadian immigration ITA, candidates must meet the minimum entry criteria of a federal economic immigration program in order to enter the Federal Express Entry pool where they will be ranked by the Comprehensive Ranking System. The CRS ranks candidates under the following components:

  • Human capital factors;

  • Accompanying spouse or common-law partner factors, if applicable;

  • Skill transfer-ability factors; and

  • Factors relating to a provincial nomination, a qualifying offer of arranged employment, a previous study in Canada, having a sibling in Canada, or proof of French ability. These all make up a total of 1,200 points.

The Canadian immigration’s invitation to apply is valid for 60 calendar days and extensions are not granted, no matter what. Consequently, it is a good idea for candidates who have not yet been invited to gather, prepare, and review all of their supporting documentation before they receive an invitation to apply. By the time they are invited and taken into account the 60-day validity, it may already be too late to get everything in order. If a candidate misses the 60-day deadline, the invitation to apply is no longer valid and he or she will have to re-enter the Express Entry pool.
